Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius, in tribute to her late husband, and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Fold and tear into plate professionally restored and hardly noticeable when viewed from recto. Verso Latin text.
